Operator offers to pay handset makers to help complete R&D on TD-SCDMA network.
China Mobile has asked some the world's largest handset manufacturers to help it solve the "severe" problems it's experiencing with its 3G technology, reports the Financial Times.The operator is basing its 3G services on the locally developed TD-SCDMA network standard, with rivals China Unicom and China Telecom going with the internationally-established WCDMA and CDMA2000, respectively.
But trials highlighted ongoing faults in the unproven TD-SCDMA network and the handsets that support it, with new models introduced in January only partially solving the problems.
As such China Mobile is now asking Nokia, Samsung,LG and Sony Ericsson to co-fund R&D. It's currently offering 40 TD-SCDMA devices, but says 200 dual mode models are needed.
