Sessions have jumped 870 per cent since January.

New stats from analytics company Flurry reveals that China has leapfrogged the UK to be the second hungriest consumer of apps behind the US.

It's been a dizzying ascent as China began the year ranked tenth, with 1.8 per cent of all sessions tracked.  By April, it had climbed to fifth with 2.7 per cent, but by the end of October, it grabbed 7.3 per cent of sessions.

The US remained miles ahead at 47 per cent.

China leads a large group of countries whose app consumption has grown by over 200 per cent.

But the sheer scale of the country, with over 950 million mobile users, makes its overall app activity pretty daunting.

Flurry itself is feeling the benefit of this through its AppCircle mobile app traffic acquisition network. It says that downloads of new apps from China on AppCircle grew from 1.2 per cent to 12 per cent from January to October. This helped the AppCircle network grow by 2.5 times.

So what's causing such growth? Apart from the sheer number of users in China, Flurry reckons falling hardware prices and the growth of low-price Android devices.

This was borne out by the observation earlier this week that there are 40m Android phones in use there, and that the OS is tightening its grip on the region.
