Country still no-nearer next-gen mobile rollout despite government promises, says report.
The FT is reporting on problems within China's mobile sector, where government insistence that country should use the so-called inferior TD-SCDMA standard is said to be holding up progress.Specifically, analysts reckon the government's support of China Mobile's planned rollout of TD-SCDMA will be to the detriment of smaller rivals, such as China Telecom (which is in the process of buying Unicom's CDMA assets).
Consultancy BDA is reported as having said: "Building the TD-SCDMA network provides a sufficient reason for the government not to subject China Mobile to drastic controls. From this point of view, China Mobile's Rmb15bn investments in TD-SCDMA network construction can be seen not as a burden but as a form of protection."
The FT says China Mobile is ploughing ahead with TD-SCDMA rollout despite poor reaction among testers during a recent trial.
