Chatroulette iPhone app goes live in the App Store

Er, it's not the real Chatroulette though.

Imagine our excitement when we saw this morning that craze-of-the-month webcam site Chatroulette has launched an iPhone application.

Except it hasn't. Developer xhumans has launched an iPhone app that's called Chatroulette!, but has nothing to do with the online service with the same name (sans exclamation mark).

So, instead of letting users video-chat live with random people around the world, xhumans' app promises users that "you are conntected [sic] to a random user to chat with". Text chat, we assume.

Okay, so the actual Chatroulette would be a bit rubbish on iPhone, given the lack of a front-facing camera.

It'd only work for people wanting to see the person they're chatting to on-screen while pointing the iPhone camera at their... Oh. Maybe it would work then.

Even so, it's disheartening to see that someone's launched an app whose name and description makes it sound like the real Chatroulette, seemingly in the hope of getting people to pay $0.99 for it before realising.

We've come across xhumans before: the company has launched a blizzard of 'video lounge' apps dedicated to different themes - everything from whales, gymnastics and pizza to cats, the Pope and Uranus.

They're all basically a front-end for a YouTube search on each app's keyword.
