US firm asking questions of Brit rivals with UK's first free text for answers service.
UK residents can now text the ChaCha short code at 85852 and receive a personalised answer. They are charged only for the text, rather than the premium rate that rivals such as 63336 and Texperts charge. These can be as high as £1.50 per answer.
It's working with OpenMarket to enable free SMS delivery.
ChaCha launched in the US in 2008 by Scott A. Jones, an entrepreneur who made his name in voicemail technology and was a founder of Gracenote, the music ID service.
It currently has 60,000 'guides' answering 3m questions a day. The service is free to users because it's funded by major brands for which ChaCha runs text campaigns based on user targeting.
Jones said: "The UK is known for its very clever and active mobile population, and the ChaCha team is anxious to show this new audience why we’ve become the world’s number 1 real-time mobile Q&A service."
