Promising full range of shows to watch this Autumn.
US broadcaster CBS has built an HTML5-based version of its website for iPad, which by Autumn will offer the same video content as the Flash-based main site.
CBS Interactive SVP and general manager Anthony Soohoo tells NewTeeVee that for now, the iPad-friendly site has mainly promotional clips, but that this will change in time for the Autumn season of shows.
Rival ABC has launched a downloadable iPad app for its own shows, but Sooho says CBS decided a different strategy was required.
"When we were looking at the iPad as a separate device, it had a lot more similarities to a PC in our mind," he says. "So for us, we wanted to make sure that video was available through HTML5 on the iPad first."
Actually, both strategies represent a win for Apple: they're evidence that its stance against Flash is persuading broadcasters to invest in technology - native apps or HTML5 - to convert their content to run on iPad (and iPhone).
