Capcom's mobile revenue hits $52.6m in Q4 2011

A 68 per cent year on year rise for the Japanese publisher.

It's been a long slog for Capcom, which is one of the world's oldest and most high profile games makers. The firm had mixed fortunes in the bad old Java days, but - like EA and Gameloft - seems to have prospered in the app store era.

Mobile revenue climbed 68 per cent to $52.6 million in the final 2011 quarter, while profit tripled to $17.9 million.

The firm's biggest hits were Snoopy’s Street Fair, Monhan Tankenki Maboroshi and Resident Evil: Outbreak Survive.

Capcom’s own mobile/social studio Beeline Interactive is also flourishing, with 46 million downloads, while monthly active users grew 30 per cent over the last three months.

Beeline was launched in April 2011 and has scored hits with Smurfs' Village, Zombie Cafe and Lil' Pirates. This quarter, Capcom expects Beeline to haul in another $78.8 million in revenue.

Mobile papered over the cracks for Capcom in 2011, a year in which revenue from arcade and video game slipped 29 per cent to $660 million.

Like so many other traditional publishers, Capcom is having to grapple with a switch away from highly profitable handheld formats to the very competitive smartphone space.

It said: “The trend of structural change washes over the video game industry, with the rapid growth of affordable and easily accessible social games attributable to the rise of mobile phones and smart phone.”
