For every 10 tablet sold this year, five laptop sales will be lost, says analyst.

The market watcher predicts there will be 52 tablet shipments this year, with Apple is expected to account for over 75 per cent.

This is going to be bad news for makers of netbooks, in particular – and those that make components for them.

Canalys expects the notebook PC category to grow nearly eight per cent in 2011. Netbooks, however, will decline by about 13 per cent to 34 million units.

"Pads are disrupting the PC refresh cycle in highly penetrated markets," said Canalys Analyst Tim Coulling.

"Their innovative user experience has captured the imagination of consumers, who are extending the life of their existing hardware, while taking an interest in pads."

It adds that trend will be most pronounced in developed markets, such as the US, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, the Nordics, Benelux, Australia, and Japan.

In other regions the lack of distribution for iPad, and the unavailablility of of localised iTunes stores, will protect the laptop market.
