UK telco launches developer contest to seek out apps for wi-fi enabled phones.
British Telecom has launched the 'BT Developers Challenge' to help find new wi-fi centric consumer and business apps for smartphones that use the Symbian OS. It will be unveiled officially at the Symbian Smartphone Show next week.The competition is offering a first prize of £1000 and is open to amateurs, professionals and open source communities. Entries must be submitted by January 16th, with the winners unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February.
BT says the Developers Challenge is geared towards supporting its Openzone wireless hotspots and its Wireless Cities initiative, which currently provides broadband coverage in 13 city centres around the UK.
Nick Sim, senior devices researcher at BT, said: "As increasing numbers of people want to work on the move and be better connected we’re seeing a growth in wi-fi enabled devices. Through this competition we hope to encourage developers to create innovative new applications for these devices, which will have a positive impact on consumers and businesses in the future."
