BT Movio has endorsed EC telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding's view that the Commission should set a broadcast mobile TV standard for Europe if the industry can't decide on one by itself.
Speaking at the CeBIT I.T. tradeshow in Germany today Reding's fired a shot across the bows of the European mobile TV sector, stating that she was 'disappointed' with the progress the industry was making towards standardising mobile TV platforms. She said: "The industry should agree on one standard. I think there's no more time to lose here... In the end I could mandate the standard but I do not want to do that."
Among the various technologies either deployed or being trialed in Europe right now are DVB-H, DAB-IP, Media FLO and DMB.
In response, BT Movio marketing director Dominic Strowbridge said: “BT Movio warmly welcomes the support Commissioner Reding has expressed for the future of mobile TV in Europe. The Commissioner's recognition of the strength of broadcast technologies such as DVB-H to address a global market potentially worth 11.4 billion euro by 2009 is particularly notable."
He continued: "BT Movio’s bearer-agnostic IP-based technology will allow seamless integration with DVB-H; however, the availability of DVB-H in the UK will be severely limited until 2012 due to spectrum availability. Complementary technologies such as Movio’s DAB-IP solution are therefore key to enabling early entry into the mobile TV market."
