Browser based apps come to GetJar

Browser based apps come to GetJar

Partnership with Openwave promises 'write once run anywhere' with apps that leverage network assets.

The deal marries Openwave Amplicity platform with GetJar’s app catalog and publishing interface.

It creates a floating toolbar on the subscriber screen that can be populated with apps that run on the browser.

Obviously, this removes the need for the user to download, install, and manage these apps.

And for the developer it simplifies the coding process. There's no device fragmentation to worried about,  and they can write apps that leverage web standards like HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.

That's good for GetJar as it brings more products to its store, and it helps Openwave return some influence back to operators with apps that are more network-dependent.

“Openwave is delighted by this collaboration with GetJar and what it means to both operators and developers alike,” said Dan Nguyen, vice president of product management, Openwave.

“Operator assets have always been valuable, but have yet to be properly leveraged by ecosystem players. We believe that Openwave and GetJar will help operators to re-insert themselves back into the data path while providing new revenue models for application developers.”

The Openwave Amplicity/GetJar solution is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2011.
