Up from £700m in 2010.
Yesterday, we reported that UK retailers are currently missing out on as many as 21 million consumers that hate queuing in shops, so it may come as little surprise that Britons have adopted m-commerce for shopping on the move.
Price comparison firm Kelkoo and the Centre for Retail Research say that the UK has the largest amount of mobile shoppers in Europe.
Britons are expected to spend £4.5 billion on the m-commerce platform this year, which is a 584 per cent rise from the £700 million spent in 2010 and a 53 per cent rise from £3 billion spent in 2011, according to the report.
With the UK leading for third year running, Germany is expected to spend £2.7 billion, while France is predicted to spend £1.9 billion.
Results show that there are around 24.6 million smartphones in the UK and with 46 per cent of mobile users choosing a smartphone there was an average of £192 spent each.

Further spends per person average at £160 for those in Norway, followed by Sweden with £147. However, lowest spenders were Poland with £45, Spain with £43 and Italy with £23.
Chris Simpson, CMO, Kelkoo, said: "Over the last two years, shopping on mobile phones has increased exponentially as a result of simple and secure payment systems, better functionality and increased uptake of ‘always on’ mobile devices such as iPads and tablets.
"The fact that mobile retailing in the UK has grown by a staggering 584 per cent since 2010 alone highlights how UK consumers are going beyond the PC to find the best online prices wherever they are. At Kelkoo we’ve seen phenomenal growth in mobile shopping comparisons and we’ll be working with our retailers to make the mobile shopping experience as easy as possible from comparison to purchase."
