London to JFK route will allow users to send texts and access the mobile web.

British Airways has revealed that passengers on its soon-to-be-launched London City Airport to JFK route will be able to send text messages, emails and access the internet from their phones in-flight.

The Daily Telegraph reports that BA may consider allowing voice calls too if the service proves successful.

As the article points out, Emirates was the first airline to offer in-flight mobile services in March last year.

Details of how BA intends to price the service (Emirates charges £2 a minute for voice calls) remain to be seen. Probably best not to use it for content downloads though, we're guessing.

A BA spokesman said: “The service is aimed at people in the Square Mile. We believe the route and the new technology will offer an appealing package to business travellers.”
