boxPAY launches 'pay by mobile' service

SMS-based billing specialist extends option to customers in 35 countries.

Ireland-based boxPAY offers web merchants, game developers, and other e-businesses a way to charge customers for digital content through phones.

Now it's moving fully into the 'pay by mobile' area occupied by firms like Zong, Boku and Onebip. This gives the user the option to pay from the phone bill, with a text confirmation sent to add a layer of security.

Gavin McConnon, co founder of boxPAY, said: "A challenge news and media outlets often face is figuring out how to make money from their content outside of subscription services and advertising.

Readers often encounter payment walls that restrict further access to a story or content, and require readers to commit to a lengthy subscription. This interrupts the user experience and can result in lost readership and revenue."

Cash registers may be disappearing, thus companies like Square is looking for ways to replace customer's wallets with their mobile phones. The transaction program brings credit card processing to anybody with a smartphone, and it is proving very popular. Now, Square has updated its service with a location-aware app that allows near-field style payments without a specialty NFC setup. I found this here: Square creates location-aware card-free payments.
