Mobile veteran appointed as president of social location service.

Social location service Loopt has appointed Steve Boom as president.

Boom is a veteran of the mobile entertainment industry, having spent ten years overseeing Yahoo's mobile offering, before joining mobile social network mig33.

He'll continue in his role as chairman of that company, while taking on the president position at Loopt.

"I’m thrilled to be joining the dynamic team at Loopt, which pioneered mobile location-based services," says Boom.

"There’s no question that this is the hottest space in mobile and is heading into the mainstream. The timing is perfect to transform Loopt's early leadership into a truly remarkable company."

Boom joins at an important time for Loopt. The company has had less hype than services like Foursquare, yet has signed up more users - four million to three million at the current time.

Loopt was also one of the first social location companies to spin off a separate app focused on brands and commerce, with Loopt Star.

However, with the launch of Facebook Places this month, the social location sector is in a spin figuring out what Facebook's entry into the market means.

Interestingly, Loopt was once tagged as a likely acquisition for Facebook, but the rumours came to nothing.

Boom and CEO Sam Altman's job is to figure out how Loopt can make hay as an independent service, while also helping to take social location more mainstream than it is now.
