Universal Studios has announced plans to release iPhone apps to control interactive content on Blu-ray movies.
The first to get the treatment is the Blu-ray special edition of Fast & Furious, which comes out later this month. It includes a virtual car garage, which viewers will be able to control and navigate using an app on their iPhone or iPod touch.
Universal says this involves "360-degree views of the movie's supercharged street-racers and instantly punch up exclusive technical specs for the film's high-tech cars" over their home Wi-Fi network.
"Bridging these platforms further broadens the scope of the digital landscape by paving the way for innovative new applications and interactive content enhancements that continue to uniquely engage consumers," says Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures Digital Platforms.
The 3D garage doesn't sound that useful for an iPhone treatment if we're honest - can't you control the garage using your regular Blu-ray player remote?
However, Universal plans other iPhone apps for future releases with different features, including the ability to download bonus content, and the ability for couch potatoes to update their Twitter and Facebook accounts to brag about the film they're watching.
