EA already getting to grips with new hardware.
Research In Motion has confirmed its plans to support the OpenGL ES technology in its BlackBerry handsets, kicking off with the new BlackBerry Storm 2.
That's big news for mobile games firms, meaning they can bring the kind of rich 3D games that they've been making for iPhone to BlackBerry. Until now, RIM's App World has been basically about ported Java titles when it comes to games.
EA Mobile has already created a demo of its Need For Speed Shift game running on the Storm 2, which was shown off during the keynote at today's BlackBerry Developer Conference.
In his opening speech, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie explained that the company is keen for games firms to not just make use of these new 3D capabilities. RIM's new services platform will also let them use peer-to-peer messaging, push notifications, location-based alerts and in-app advertising.
All of these things have been available on the iPhone since earlier this year, of course. But matching them is a sensible strategy for RIM, since it may persuade some of the many iPhone games developers to begin bringing their games to BlackBerry.
