IDW Publishing bringing its range to RIM's App World.

Comics and graphic novels firm IDW Publishing is launching a range of its titles as BlackBerry apps, the company has announced.

It's starting with the Star Trek: Countdown graphic novel, followed by Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Star Trek: Movie Adaptation, and G.I. Joe: The Rise of COBRA.

"Each BlackBerry app collects an entire series into an individual graphic novel, and people can sample part of the story before they decide to purchase," explains IDW's director of ePublishing Jeff Webber.

The apps offer panel-by-panel viewing, with news feeds to ensure fans are kept up to date with new releases.

BlackBerry developer Sweet Caesar developed the apps alongside IDW. Star Trek: Countdown is available now for $4.99.

Smartphones and other devices are an important new distribution channel for comics publishers. iPad in particular is seeing lots of activity: for example Marvel Comics' impressive app.
