RIM takes the wraps off two distribution channels for BlackBerry content.

Research In Motion says its new online Application Storefront and an on-device portal (Application Center) will help developers and carriers reach end-users.

It means RIM is now going head to head with the likes of Apple, Nokia, Microsoft and Google in the mobile content retail race.

The company plans to launch the online storefront in March 2009, with developers able to begin submitting applications and content for inclusion in December.

Similar to the Apple App Store the BlackBerry storefront will allow developers to set their own prices for content and retain 80 per cent of the revenue they generate.

End-user payment for the content will be handled by PayPal, straight from the device.

RIM is also working with its operator partners to provide customised, embedded on-device app centers to help drive after-market downloads.

Mike Lazaridis, president and Co-CEO at Research In Motion, said: "The introduction of more consumer-friendly features in BlackBerry smartphones has clearly helped generate a groundswell of interest with new developers that has already resulted in the introduction of thousands of consumer and lifestyle oriented applications for BlackBerry smartphones.”
