Bernstein Research hails iPad's 'runaway success'

Predicts $9 billion of sales next year.

Bernstein Research says Apple's iPad is on course to be one of the most successful consumer electronics launches ever.

Analyst Colin McGranahan points to its three million sales in its first 80 days, and compares that to the 350,000 DVD player sales in the first year of that technology.

What's more, Bernstein is predicting sales of more than $9 billion for Apple's tablet in the US alone next year - behind only TVs, smartphones and notebook PCs as a consumer electronics product category, and ahead of gamess consoles and feature phones.

"The iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box," says McGranahan. "By any account, the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion."

McGranahan also claims that iPad is set to cannibalise several other gadgets in the coming year and beyond.

"It is the rare American household that would spend $600-plus dollars on an iPad and buy a TV or a PC or a digital camera in the same month, or the same quarter, or maybe even the same year,” he said.
