New mobile site blends Breathing Places with BBC Weather data.
The BBC's Learning Innovations department has unveiled a new mobile internet site called Open Air.
It identifies a user's location, then serves up a blend of event listings from its Breathing Places site, and local weather data from BBC Weather.
The site uses Google's Gears software, meaning that for now, the location detection element only works on Android handsets and newer Windows Mobile phones. On others, it gets users to enter postcodes or place names instead.
"With BBC Open Air we wanted to build a complete demo with a location-based search at one end backed up with some useful content at the other," blogs development producer Dominic Tinley.
"Building this demo allows us to test and demonstrate the technical feasibility of finding a location using the core capabilities of new mobile devices rather than having to develop bespoke applications that a user must install."

Tinley also says the Beeb wants to add support for iPhone's Safari browser, which recently got geo-location features to enable sites like Open Air.
