Mobile needs more ‘inspiring chaos’ if it is to catch up with the dynamic internet content scene, said Endemol’s Peter Bazalgette at the keynote for the MEM show earlier today.
In an occasionally critical address, Bazalgette chided the mobile business for not doing enough to standardise technologies and business models. He said that this had allowed broadband to develop concepts (implicitly Youtube, MySpace and others) that have become hotbeds of creativity and, in his words, the “inspiring chaos that teens love”. By contrast, mobile has lost ground. But it wasn’t all bad. Bazalgette, whose company produces Big Brother, also stated that Endemol has served millions of video clips to mobile and is planning a made-for-mobile short form production.
It was a bright start for MEM, which ventured to Monaco for the first time. No official figures were available but it appeared as if around 450 people were in attendance. This is in line with previous years. What will be more interesting will be to discover the profiles of the delegates. More on this soon. One sore point: it’s Monte Carlo, so why is it raining?
