This, despite already partnering with other e-book makers for its digital store.
US retailer Barnes & Noble plans to launch its own e-reader device in time for Christmas, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal.
It suggests the device will have a six-inch touchscreen and a wireless connection to download e-books from the retailer's own digital store, using AT&T's network.
The device is seemingly being made for Barnes & Noble by Taiwanese company Amtek, which filed for FCC approval for the device in September.
It's an interesting development, because Barnes & Noble already has an e-book store with 700,000 titles which it's providing for other e-reader makers, including Plastic Logic and iRex.
Launching its own device could be problematic for those relationships, if the retailer is seen to be promoting its own device in-store more heavily than those of its partners.

Of course, the main rival to Barnes & Noble's device will be Amazon's Kindle, which ties into Amazon's own e-book store.
