Person-to-person money service now available to over 16s who have a UK current account and mobile number.
Pingit has been downloaded more than 400,000 times since it launched in February. It lets registered users transfer up to £300 at a time using only a mobile number, without the need to share bank details.
Originally, the Blackberry, Android and iOS app could only be downloaded by Barclays customers, although any bank account holder could receive payments. But that's changing, so now any bank customer can register to send payments.
It's also bringing 16 and 17 year olds into the fold as a response to demand from younger users.
Antony Jenkins, chief executive of retail and business banking at Barclays, said: “Pingit is proving to be more popular than even we were expecting. It is potentially a revolution in banking but this is just the beginning.
“We are listening to customer feedback and monitoring the demand for additional functionality so there’s a lot more to come over the next few months.”
