Barack Obama gets a livestreaming iPhone app

The White House will also offer news and photos.

The White House has launched its official iPhone app, offering live video streaming of public events and press briefings.

That includes Barack Obama's State of the Union speech next week, which will be streamed live via the free application.

"Now anyone with this app can watch the President’s public events at the White House, frequent web chats with Administration officials, and other events like key speeches and press briefings in real time," says the official blog post announcing the app.

The app also offers posts from the White House blog, and behind-the-scenes photos.

Meanwhile, the US administration will soon launch a new mobile website, mobile.whitehouse.gov, to let users of other phones stay in touch with what Obama and his government are up to.

"Mobile internet access is an important way Americans are staying informed," notes the blog.

We wonder if the White House app will leap to other smartphones? Given Obama's famous love of his BlackBerry, surely RIM will be on the phone to his people already selling the merits of BlackBerry App World...
