Bank to promote UK spectrum auction

Morgan Stanley appointed by Ofcom to evangelise auction that could decide future of UK mobile TV.

Investment bank Morgan Stanley will promote Ofcom's auction of the so-called 'digital dividend' radio spectrum to prospective international bidders.

The spectrum, freed up due to the 2012 switchover from analogue to digital TV, will be used for a mix of mobile TV, HD terrestrial digital TV and wireless broadband services.

In a statement Ofcom said of Morgan Stanley's appointment: "The award of this spectrum creates many opportunities for new firms and new technologies to enter the UK wireless communications market, boosting competition and innovation.

"Ofcom's objective is to award the digital dividend in a way that maximises the value to society - both citizens and consumers - from its future use."
