Aurasma to create augmented national newspaper

Taiwan's United Daily News to enrich the reading experience for 1m readers.

Aurasma is the visual browser developed by search giant Autonomy. Like other AR engines, it lets users access videos and animations by pointing the camera on their device towards a trigger image or object.

2m users have downloaded its app across iPhone4, iPad and Android. The firm has run campaigns with Panasonic and others in POS at Best Buy, Comet, Dixons Travel, Jessops and John Lewis.

This deal is a pretty big one for the UK firm, as UDN has over 1m readers. Aurasma has already been used by London Fashion Week's newspaper, The Daily, and Italy's Ecco Biella.

Aurasma has worked with UDN to launch the media groups' new Vmagic service - a smartphone app with Aurasma embedded inside.

Martina King, MD of Aurasma, said: "Look at any newspaper today and chances are, advertising inside will be carrying the "A" logo - identifying to readers that it is Aurasma-enabled.

"It is an incredible achievement, just four months after our launch. The next step is enabling editorial content, just as the United Daily News is doing."

This is not the first AR enabled newspaper to launch. For example, Blippar teamed up with the irish Metro Herald in September to create 'blippable' editorial and advertising content.
