Aurasma partners with Bandai to animate boxed toys

AR smartphone app to bring characters like Ben 10 to life in 3D.

Last week Aurasma became our App Of The Day for integrating a 3D feature into its augmented reality and image recognition tech.

The new partnership between Aurasma and Bandai is the first commercial use of the former's 3D engine. Together the two firms will be demonstrating their efforts at this year's Toy Fair 2012.

The goal is to offer children an interactive experience in stores where the toys remain boxed up until purchase with a digital 'try before you buy' platform.

By pointing an Aurasma-enabled smartphone or tablet at specially boxed items including Ben 10, Thundercats and Power Rangers, shoppers are able to produce a 3D animated version of the character. In addition users will also be offered the option to visit the online site.

Martina King, MD, Aurasma, said: "Parents will now have to remember not to throw away the packaging which, thanks to Aurasma, looks set to become an essential part of the toy's experience and something kids keep returning to.

"Using new technology comes as second nature to kids today and whether using their parents' or their own mobile phone, this imaginative partnership between Aurasma and Bandai will delight the whole family."

Darrell Jones, marketing director, Bandai, said: "Bandai is always working to make our toys more imaginative and interactive than ever before so we are thrilled to be the first commercial partner to use this pioneering 3D technology from Aurasma.

"By partnering together, we're creating a 21st century toy experience where the physical toy, its digital animation and our online presence come together in a completely new way. For our customers to be able to unlock this experience with their own smartphone while in store or at home is a real first for the toy industry, and we look forward to extending this partnership in 2012."
