Gamification + music = App Store hit in the making?

The latest social music app to emerge for iPhone is AudioVroom, which will blend Pandora-like streaming personalised radio with points-focused game mechanics to keep users interested.

The app is due to be released on the App Store in the coming days according to Evolver.fm, which got a first look at it. The app is the work of developer Social Genius, and is described as a 'multi-user internet radio station'.

That means users can stream music, marking tracks as liked or disliked, but are also encouraged to spread the app to friends to earn more listening time.

It works using a points system, where 100 points equals an hour of listening time, after which people must either earn more points by sharing the app and interacting with friends through it, or buy them at a rate of $1 per 500 points.

"Growing our user base — growing your friend list — builds up your points," says co-founder Marcos Lara. "There are all sorts of gradations… the more points you earn, the more music you can listen to for free."

AudioVroom will also have Foursquare-style badges awarded for particular user activity. It uses APIs from technology firms Echo Nest and Bump, and will include a DJ mode designed to be used at parties to play songs that a group of friends like.
