Atrinsic buys ringtone.com site

Atrinsic has bought the assets of the prized internet domain Ringtone.com from W3i Holdings.

The US digital media company, which comprises the D2C player New Motion, will pay $6.25 million in cash for the site. Ringtone.com receives more than 1,000 signups per day. Atrinsic will now work on upgrading the site from a purely subscription-based model into one with multiple revenue streams, including an ad-supported.

Internet domains like Ringtone.com are especially valuable in the US, where do much content discovery takes place on the wired internet. Burton Katz, Atrinsic’s CEO, said: “Ringtones are the historic growth driver behind worldwide mobile content sales. Over the past year and a half, there have been fundamental shifts in the subscription based business model supporting these services creating unique opportunities in a business continuing to see strong consumer demand. This accretive asset purchase enables us to re-enter the ringtone market.”
