US operator activated 1.9 million iPhones during the quarter, with total data revenue up 51 per cent.
AT&T's 4Q08 iPhone 3G activations totaled 1.9 million, approximately 40 per cent to customers who were new to AT&T.The company's total iPhone activations in the second half of 2008 hit 4.3 million units.
The iPhone effect was felt elsewhere in the company's 4Q08 financials too, with wireless data revenues up 51.2 per cent compared to 4Q07 at $3.1 billion.
Data (inc messaging) represented 26.6 per cent of AT&T's fourth-quarter wireless service revenues, up from 19.9 per cent in the year-earlier quarter.
AT&T added 2.1 million net subs the quarter to reach 77 million in total, up seven million from end-2007.

Yesterday rival Verizon Wireless Mobile said its data revenues hit $10.7 billion in FY08, up 44 per cent over 2007.
