New exec installed to drive market for cellular-enabled laptops, PCs, cameras and satnav's.

AT&T is the latest operator to start exploring devices beyond mobile phones in a meaningful way - it has appointed a President of Emerging Devices, National Distribution and Resale.

Glenn Lurie, who secured the deal with Apple that ensured AT&T was the US exclusive iPhone partner, is now charged with developing the operator's strategy when it comes to connecting PCs, mobile Internet devices, in-car entertainment, navigation systems and cameras to its 3G network.

There's a growing movement among the stakeholders in the mobile sector to spread cellular connectivity beyond the humble phone.

Last month the GSM Association confirmed it and 17 partners would be spending $1 billion next year on marketing devices that have been enabled for mobile broadband access.
