AT&T exec hints at iPad TV rights confusion

Is it a mobile or a computer? Er...

Apple's iPad is an ideal device for watching TV shows, but rights issues have been a problem in broadcasters licensing their content for iPad apps.

The latest sign: an interview with AT&T's president of content Dan York by Business Insider.

"It can be used as a TV monitor, it can be used as a PC, and it’s a portable mobile device," he says.

"So it could be considered all of the above and the grant of content rights and distribution to it is an area that’s being sorted out right now."

York's comments follow ME's interview with MobiTV earlier this year, in which the company said that TV firms are demanding more money to license their shows for iPad apps, due to fears over cannibalisation of actual TV viewing.

However, York says that AT&T is seeing strong growth for its mobile (as opposed to iPad) TV business, and reports that content companies are "open and receptive" to working around licensing snags.

"It’s important that everyone in the ecosystem find ways to not only expand the market for content delivery but to preserve the business models that have made it as successful as it’s been today."
