ARM's 'next-gen mobile games vision'

Chip designer espouses the capabilities of its Mali GPU technology and ecosystem.

ARM is using this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco to outline what it calls a vision for next-generation mobile gaming.

Specifically, ARM's Mali GPU technology has now been licensed by 27 companies, who it hopes will go on and put it in mobile handsets.

If they do, a wondeful world of high-end 3D gaming, enhanced UIs and hi-def video awaits.

However, before this can happen ARM says all parts of the industry will need to embark on a collaborative effort to move forward and rid the world of handsets based on "yesterday's platforms".

Borgar Ljosland, director of advanced product marketing for ARM’s Media Processing Division, said: “Gaming strategy and visually compelling applications are becoming increasingly important now that mobile handheld devices are so prolific, and the time has come to create innovative new gaming concepts.

“Today’s consumer devices are based on yesterday’s platforms, and there is a tremendous opportunity for a revolution in the gaming market that hinges on the collaborative efforts of IP providers, foundries and OEMs alike."
