ARM: Get ready for next-gen 3D Java graphics

Chipset specialist says advent of M3G2 API is good news for mobile games and beyond.

The company, which licenses its chipset designs to a host of manufacturers, says a perfect storm is brewing for mobile games hardware and software.

Specifically, ARM anticipates that more than a billion handsets will be equipped with GPUs by 2012, with Java in 80 per cent of handsets worldwide during the same timeframe.

As such, it's pushing an industry-led effort to produce the next generation Mobile 3D Graphics 2.0 specification (known as “M3G2”, or “JSR 297”) to encourage the development of new apps.

ARM's legacy M3G solution, Mali-JSR184 software, has shipped in over 100 million units worldwide.

The company says its new M3G2 solution, Mali-JSR297 will start shipping in devices during the second half of this year.

Writing in an article for ME, ARM Media Processing Division's Srinivas Gattamneni said: "Importantly, consumers will be able to set apart these devices based on performance and visual quality of content. The additional features of M3G2 also help to widen the reach of 3D beyond games and into other applications where information can be brought to life with 3D visuals."
