ARM damns Intel mobile chips with faint praise

New Medfield processor is 'good enough'.

Intel has historically been absent from the smartphone and tablet space, while ARM has cleaned up.

But last week it confirmed agreements with Motorola and Lenovo to put its new Medfield chip inside devices this year.

Reuters spoke to ARM CEO Warren East at CES, and he was lukewarm about the whole thing, implying that Intel's designs were merely adequate.

"They have taken some designs that were never meant for mobile phones and they've literally wrenched those designs and put them into a power-performance space which is roughly good enough for mobile phones.

"It's inevitable Intel will get a few smartphone design wins - we regard Intel as a serious competitor.

"Are they ever going to be the leaders in power efficiency? No, of course not. But they have a lot more to offer."

East reminded Reuters that ARM was hardly resting on its laurels and said that its new Cortex A7 design had the same performance as chips in smartphones of only a few years ago, but at 20 per cent of the power consumption.]

He also expressed excitement at the expected launch of ARM-based, Windows 8-compatible tablets in the second half of this year.
