Appy Xmas: 242m downloads on Christmas day

Stocking bulge with native clients.

Research from Flurry confirmed that Christmas 2011 was dominated by smartphones and tablets, with the result that 242m apps were downloaded on the big day and 1.2bn across the holiday week of December 25th-31st.

It's the first time app downloads have passed 1bn in a week, said Flurry.

By comparison the stats say that an average of 750m apps downloaded per week earlier in December. That's a 60 per cent jump.

The US consumer did the most downloading at 509 million, followed by China (99 million), and the UK (81 million).

All of this activity was powered by the huge number of smartphones and tablets on the world's Christmas lists. 6.8 million devices were activated, up 353 per cent from the 1.5 million average activations a day over the first 20 days of December.

Great to see mobile app downloads increase throughout the year, let alone the huge spike witnessed on Christmas. This shows the adaptation of smartphones and mobile apps. With mobile advertising in mind, our company looks to buy more traffic from app developers in order to serve our ads more effectively. More app downloads means more engaged users to target.
