Apple weighs into Lodsys patent battle on behalf of iOS developers

Says it wants to protect broader licensing rights for thousands of developers.

Apple has filed a motion to intervene in the patent infringement battle between Lodsys and seven iOS developers. The news will cheer the iOS development community, which had been calling for Apple to take part in the case.

In its filing, Apple says that the sued developers "lack the resources to fully and fairly litigate the issue of whether Lodsys’s claims are exhausted", spurring its decision to intervene.

"While the Developers will likely be interested in resolving this case as quickly and inexpensively as possible, Apple's interest is in protecting its broader license rights with respect to thousands of App developers for Apple products who may be the subject of future Lodsys lawsuits or threats."

Blog FOSS Patents, which has been covering the issue comprehensively, predicts that Apple's intervention will be allowed by the court, but suggests that it leaves certain questions unanswered.

The most pressing concerns Android developers affected by Lodsys' lawsuits or patent infringement threats: Google may face similar pressure to intervene now that Apple has made its move.
