16GB and 32GB flavours go on sale June 19th priced at $199 and $299, respectively.
The first countries to get the device will be the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland.
Six more countries will follow within a week of that and a total of 80 countries will have the device by August.
Pricing outside US will be confirmed by individual operator partners and is dependent on subsidy.
Apple has also confirmed it will continue to sell the existing iPhone 3G as its entry level handset for $99.
At WWDC, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of WorldWide Product Marketing, said iPhone 3G S was on average twice as fast as iPhone 3G.

The headline specs for iPhone 3G S, very much in line with earlier leaks, are as follows:
- 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity
- 3MP camera (with tap to focus function)
- Video capture at 30 FPS VGA, which can be sent via email or mms. There's also an API for in-app video capture.
- OpenGL ES 2.0 support for advanced 3D graphics.
- Voice control - Users can tell iPhone 3GS to play songs by certain artists or acess playlists etc.
- Built-in Nike+ support.
- New digital compass integrated into Maps
- Five hours talk time, nine hours of wi-fi internet.
Schiller said: “iPhone 3G S is the fastest, most powerful iPhone yet and we think people will love the incredible new features including autofocus camera, video recording and the freedom of voice control."
Meanwhile, iPhone OS 3.0 software will be available on June 17th as a free software update via iTunes 8.2 or later for all iPhone customers. iPod touch customers will be able to purchase a software update for £5.99 (inc. VAT)
