Apple to release curved glass devices in 2012?

Fresh rumours surface from Taiwanese supplier sources.

DigiTimes had speculated about this move before, and now says Apple and rival device makers are gearing up to introduce products with curved touchscreens in the first half of 2012.

The story suggests Apple bought glass polishing equipment for its suppliers in preparation for the production of devices fitted with curved cover glass.

DigiTimes says Lens Technology, Fuji Crystal, G-Tech are said to be major cover glass suppliers of Apple. Lens and Fuji will focus on iPhones, with G-Tech supplies mainly for iPad.

This news will come as a blow to Apple's competitors who reportedly believed adopting the new curved glass would provide them with the upper hand against the iPhone creator.

Probably the best-known curved screen device is the Samsung Nexus S. But it’s worth noting that Apple itself has used curved screens on iPod Nano devices.

In May, we reported that there were rumours of the iPhone 5 coming with curved glass due to Apple's purchase of approximately 300 glass cutting machines.

Since the revelation there has been no more evidence to support the claims suggesting the new look may not arrive until the iPhone 6 or iPad 3.
