Apologises for the technical problems.

Apple has announced that more than 600,000 people pre-ordered an iPhone 4 on Tuesday alone.

"It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions," says the company in a statement.

The launch of the pre-order process was hampered by websites falling over and other bugs in the system. In the US and UK, the initial stocks available for pre-order appear to have sold out.

The news has led Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster to up his prediction for overall iPhone sales to 9.5 million units in Q2, and a further 9.5 million in Q3.

He's been crunching the numbers on AT&T subscribers, suggesting that 8.4 million of its iPhone customers are eligible to upgrade, and that 1.3 million of them will do it this quarter.
