So-called Transaction e-wallet for the iPhone uses NFC and other technologies
Apple has filed a patent (back in 2008) for an app that facilitates peer-to-peer financial exchanges.
Patently Apple has full details of the app, which Apple calls Transaction in the patent document.
It seems that Transaction will be able to trigger P2P payments in numerous ways, including NFC, image recognition, WAN, LAN or PAN.
Apple uses the iPhone an example throughout the patent document, but it appears payments can be made between other Apple devices, such as iMacs.

It's not known if Apple's Transaction app will ever see the light of day. What is clear, however, is that with companies like Square also making waves, the payments app segment is warming up nicely.
