Apple's iAds go live in the US, but not elsewhere

International rollout coming in 'a few months'.

Apple's iAd mobile advertising network launched yesterday in North America, but the company has confirmed that its rich media ads won't appear in other territories until later this year.

"At launch, we’ll roll out in North America and ramp up the number of ads served in the weeks and months ahead," confirms the company's Developer Program page. "For developers outside of North America, iAd will be rolled out in a few months."

One of the first iAds to appear yesterday was one for Nissan's Leaf electric car - an ad that was shown off by Steve Jobs during his WWDC keynote last month.

German publisher Fishlabs is one of the first games firms to take advantage, re-releasing its Burning Tires game as a free iAd-supported version for the US.

"Ad-funded mobile games are nothing new, but with iAd, Apple has created a format that does not cause media discontinuity, thanks to its multimedia capabilities and seamless integration," says CEO Michael Schade.

"As a premium manufacturer, Apple is also able to market premium ads at fair prices. Ultimately, everyone wins. Players get free access to high-quality content, brands can present themselves and their products in a premium environment with an enormous reach, and developers have another option to monetise their costly development."

Other apps already using iAds include TextGroups, Tiptitude, UDID Helper, Air Hockey Gold, Removem Free and Mirror Free for iPhone 4, according to The Pocket Cyclone blog.
