Apple reveals 9th September music launch event

Exactly as rumoured, new iPods should be unveiled next week... but what else?

Apple has confirmed that it will hold a "special event" next Wednesday - 9th September - with invites sent out to journalists with a strong music theme.

"It's only rock and roll, but we like it." is the slogan, accompanied by one of Apple's trademark silhouetted white earphone-toting dancers.

That should mean new iPods, including a new iPod touch which - if online rumours are correct - will include a camera for the first time.

However, the event may well see a new version of Apple's iTunes software, possibly with social features including some kind of Facebook integration for users to let friends know what they're listening to.

More speculation has surrounded Apple's possible plans for a new music format - codenamed 'Cocktail' - which would bundle interactive elements with digital albums, ripe for being played on iPhones and iPod touches. That, too, may be unveiled at next week's event.

Long shots? You got 'em! 9th September is also the release date of the remastered Beatles back-catalogue on CD.

Apple's decision to hold its music launch the same day could bring news of the Fab Four's first download deal. Its decision to quote the Rolling Stones on its invite may be a mischievous nod in that direction. Or not.

And, of course, there's the much-rumoured Apple tablet device, although recent reports have suggested it may not be unveiled until early next year.
