Apple launch event roundup: iPhone 4S, iOS 5, iCloud, iPods and more

Blogosphere still reeling at the lack of iPhone 5.

Apple's latest launch event took place in Cupertino, California last night and fans were waiting eagerly for the new device.

But, in his debut keynote, CEO Tim Cook simple revealed the iPhone 4S, an 'upgrade' to its predecessor.

We covered it all last night, but here is the full feature run-down.

* The iPad's dual-core A5 chip to see the device become seven times faster.

* Full 1080p HD video recording.

* Voice recognition assistant Siri. Available in English, French and German to start.

* iOS 5 the 'world's most advanced operating system' with over 200 new features.

* Free iCloud services that will sync with iPhone and associated Apple devices.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing, said: "iPhone 4S plus iOS 5 plus iCloud is a breakthrough combination that makes the iPhone 4S the best iPhone ever.

"While our competitors try to imitate iPhone with a checklist of features, only iPhone can deliver these breakthrough innovations that work seamlessly together."

The iPhone 5 absence has seen Apple's stocks drop by five per cent, according to TechCrunch.

With so much hype surrounding the 'iPhone 5' it's plausible Apple plans to ensure the launch of the 4S's successor will go with any of the hiccups that came with iPhone 4's signal failure, which left the company rather red faced.

The device will be priced in the US at an RRP of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model.

iCloud will launch on October 12th

Apple's access anywhere streaming data service iCloud will launch two days before the iPhone 4S, which is reported to be fully compatible along with iPod Touch, Mac, iPad and PC.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services, said: "iCloud is the easiest way to manage your content, because iCloud does it all for you and goes far beyond anything available today.

"You don't have to think about syncing your devices, because it happens automatically, and it is free.”

Downloads for users operating under iOS 5 or OS X Lion are free but for additional storage upgrades are available to purchase starting at $20 a year for 10GB, $40 a year for 20GB and $100 a year for 50GB.

iPod Touch and iPod Nano - new pricing and features

Of the 320 million iPods that have been sold, the iPod Touch has been the most successful of all.

The latest model will arrive on October 12th and comes with iOS 5 and iCloud services like sister device iPhone 4S.

It will also come in black and white colour options with a starting RRP of £169 for the 8GB model.

The new iPod Nano, which is favoured among fitness fanatics has a starting RRP of £115 for the 8GB model.

The device is available now and new features will reportedly include:

* Larger icons for redesigned multi-touch user interface.

* 16 digital clock faces from analogue to Disney characters.

* Improved built-in fitness features to track workout progress such as calories burned etc.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing, said: "iPod has revolutionised the way we listen to music and with over 320 million sold is the world’s most popular music player.

"iPod touch, now available in both black and white, is the best selling iPod ever, and with iOS 5 and iCloud it is better than ever.”
