Time falls fouls of the approvals process
Publishing giant Time is seriously unhappy with Apple for refusing to allow it to charge its readers subscriptions for magazines sells on the iPad.
Accoring to AllThingsDigital, Time's Sports Illustrated app was rejected last month because the company intended to take payment for the subscription itself, with the App Store only used to trigger the download.
So now the the app sells copies of Sports Illustrated as one-off downloads. But what's really annoyed Time is that Apple indicated during the app development process that it supported the subscription idea.
Time officials have indicated that they don't really know what the app was rejected, but the betting seems to be on the fact that Apple sees a big future in iPad mag subscriptions and wants to retain control of the process itself.
It'll be interesting to see how the situation develops - other publishers are sure to be looking at the subscription route, so perhaps we can expect Apple to officially add the functionality to its platform sooner rather than later.
