Apple extends iTunes Preview to iPhone apps

Clicking on an App Store link now takes users to a web page.

Apple has extended its iTunes Preview feature to iPhone apps, meaning that clicking on an App Store link online now takes you to a web page, rather than just firing up the iTunes software.

Check it out by clicking this link. The new feature was spotted by TechCrunch this morning.

iTunes still opens at the relevant page, but you can also browse the app from your web browser. The iTunes Preview feature was originally launched for music tracks on iTunes in November last year.

We could speculate that this is the first step towards a fully-fledged web version of the App Store, but clearly iTunes will still be needed for desktop purchases of apps.

We'd love to see a 'Send to my iPhone' feature added though, allowing people to get the app download links sent directly to their handset - or even better, to push the app itself to their iPhone for installation.
