As you read this, the ticker on the Apple App Store was reading 244bn, but it was rising by 1,000 downloads a second.
It's another reminder of the ridiculous and slightly unexpected success of the app concept, which didn't really exist (well not in its present state) until Apple opened the store in July 2008.
Since then, the momentum has grown and grown. By October 2011, Apple stated there had been over 18 billion downloads, with more than 500,000 apps available.
The firm says that the user who downloads the 25 billionth app will win a $10,000 App Store Gift Card.
