But share fell from 93 per cent in 3Q10 to 73 per cent in 4Q10, says IDC.

This is hardly surprising given the lack of competition before the final quarter of the year. Indeed, Samsung's Galaxy Tab earned a 17 per cent share.

Overall, IDC says 10.1 million media tablets were shipped in the 4Q10 – more than double the 4.5 million shipped in the previous three months.

IDC includes the eReader sector in its stats, and says this more than doubled volume from the previous quarter, with over six million units shipped for the final quarter, bringing the full-year total to 12.8 million units shipped.

eReader shipments rose 325 per cent from 2009 when roughly three million units shipped.

The US, Western Europe and Asia/Pacific (excluding Japan) accounted for 89 per cent of all media tablet shipments in 4Q10.

High street retailers is the top channel for sales, but operators accounted for nearly 14 per cent of all shipments in 4Q10 following, up from one per cent
in the third quarter.
