App Store nearing 10bn app downloads

Set to reach milestone years ahead of the original iTunes Store.

Apple has launched an online counter on its website, showing how close its App Store is to the 10 billion downloads milestone.

It's close, too. At the time of writing, the counter informs us that the store has generated 9,846,878,146 downloads, and is climbing fast.

The lucky downloader of the 10 billionth app will win a $10,000 iTunes voucher - a similar promotion to the one that celebrated the 10 billionth download from the main iTunes Store early last year.

The comparison is interesting, too. It took the iTunes Store eight years to hit the 10 billion downloads mark, but it's taken the App Store two and a half years.

Separately, research firm Asymco has crunched the numbers to estimate that the average iPhone and iPod touch user has downloaded 60 apps for their device.
